Finding a Balance

by Ashlynmathews on January 8, 2018

I love a new year. A new year gives me a chance to look backward on what I did right and wrong with my life. A new year also gives me the chance to start fresh armed with the knowledge of what worked and didn’t work for me in regards to what I struggle with on a daily basis– finding a balance between my paying job, writing life and family life. Looking back, 2017 was a busy year for me. I went back to school and earned my undergraduate degree in nursing. During this time, I worked full-time, commuting an hour and a half each way to the hospital I work at. I also put out four books:  Stay; Love, Actually (Red Meets Blue); Echo; Nightbound:  Seducing a Vampire Slayer, and re-released a revised version of Wolf’s Red, now entitled A Siren’s Heart (on sale January 22-27 for 99 cents).

If you want to keep your sanity, I recommend you don’t do what I did in 2017 :). The pace was overwhelming, and I missed precious time with my family.

Looking forward, there’ll be less books released for 2018. My new year resolution is to spend more time with my family. My boys (17 y/o, 15 y/o, and my 10 y/o twins + two very cute Golden Retrievers (boys, too)) are growing up so quickly. What does less books released mean? I hope to provide readers with longer stories. As a writer knee-deep into this writing journey, I believe longevity in the business means not getting burned out by churning out book after book after book. Some writers are able to do this, putting out a book almost every month. However, I’m in the writing camp of, “wow, this writing stuff can be mentally and physically exhausting. I need a break from the voices in my head.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love writing and sharing my characters’ struggles and successes. However, we only get the one body, and I plan on taking good care of it because my writing career is for the long haul.

What are you looking forward to in 2018?

Hi Ashlyn- can tell you are still hard on yourself & an overachiever, which is great as long as you don’t burn yourself out. Wow—you are amazing, going back to school, working and writing that many books in one year. That said, One correction—there is NO wrong! Taking a step back and putting your family and health first is never wrong—in fact it sounds like a great idea. Time flies, take it from me. While your kids are still at home–enjoy them, spend that time. You will have more of time then you could possibly want after they are gone and it happens sooner than you think. Balance is always a struggle for most of us, especially when we write and want to do everything else too. Sounds like you made some good resolutions. Happy New Year!

Thanks Anna and Happy New Year to you too. Yes, finding a good balance is difficult when we have the want or desire to do EVERYTHING. It’ll be nice to step away from the writing for a little while and enjoy time with my kiddos.
